Despite knowing she’s precise, that she’s exacting and particular and thorough, despite all of that, Percy can’t help but have the unshakeable and unnerving conviction that his insides are not as they should be, that she's put something back wrong.

Summary
They’ve had to split from the rest of the party in this castle dungeon, clearing out ghosts for some new family to move in. Vex and Vax obviously went together, with Pike tagging along with them. Grog and Scanlan, last Keyleth checked, have trooped down another path, in search of a rumored crypt of some famed bard belonging to the family who used to own this castle, now long since died out. That just leaves Percy, so Keyleth comes with him.
And a good thing she did, because now he is very badly hurt, eyes glowing dimly in the darkness. She knows humans shouldn’t be able to do that, shouldn’t have eyes that can see in the dark, but Percy is—strange, for a human. She sometimes wonders what happened to him, before Vex found him in that prison cell, because whatever it was, it did something to his body and to his mind.
Broke, she thinks, the word you’re looking for is broke.

Summary
It takes weeks for him to realise that Vex visits more often than anyone else. But that’s easily rationalised in one simple step: she doesn’t like the cold. There is a reason beyond camouflage in dappled forest light that she wears near as many layers as he does, and it certainly isn’t considerations of appropriate wardrobe on her part. She can’t sew for toffee, but she darns her socks religiously, almost obsessively, and not even Vax teases her for it. He could not understand the need to darn them so at first, and still wonders at it now. They’ve never hurt for coin, not really, and even if they had they would have scrounged together enough for new socks. Vex’ahlia certainly goes out of her way to ensure that they’re all well equipped, their basic needs met for the road, so he can’t see why she doesn’t buy new socks for herself. Perhaps it’s simply that no one else notices how much she does for them, too busy laughing about how fiercely she haggles with every poor merchant and vendor who is unlucky enough to stumble into her path.
Perhaps it’s just that Percy is far more aware of Vex’ahlia than is prudent or polite to admit.

Summary
The baby has been passed to Percy now because Vex and Zahra are doing that thing women do where they talk with their whole bodies, clasping arms and leaning in close enough that their foreheads are touching. It would look like they were sharing intimate secrets, except they’re both talking excitedly at normal volume, the subject having changed to one of the myriad topics that two women of class might discuss: shoes, hair, dresses, the cathartic thrill of killing something big and terrifying that was bothering people. That sort of thing.
