Kyubey checks his frustration. Among the Incubators, emotionality – irrationality – is considered a mental illness. Kyubey understands himself as an edge-case – a sort of high-functioning anomaly. The other Incubators regard him with quiet caution, but, for now, at least, he is seen as more of an oddity than a cause for suspicion. Kyubey is well aware that this could easily change. He often takes pains to conceal the full extent of his atypical emotional impulses. He has seen what happens to Incubators whose deviance is considered a threat to the collective.

While the story had always seemed so chivalric and romantic to tell as a fairytale, it felt either laughably daring or just plain dumb spoken out loud in the second person. But Severin did not laugh. Instead, he said, in a low voice with just a hint of a smile:
“A fine story. And why would I find it foolish?”

As I wander the halls by night, the building seems converted into a vast, tortuous labyrinth I open doors into darkened rooms and hesitate on the threshold, struck by a sudden fit of acrophobia, imagining that I will step clear into an empty elevator shaft, or that charred and rotted floorboards will give way under my feet. Illuminated only by the gaslights, the dark corners of each room appear ashy and charred. The air is always oppressive – stiflingly warm, and girtty. I must not dwell too long on the memory of which human bodies the fine carbon which clingingly coats my throat and nostrils once belonged to.

Utena’s fingers grasp at Anthy’s hand, gripping with all of her remaining strength. “No. NO!!" she cries. "You musn’t!! I won’t let you…” She turns her head, shrinking into the wall of the coffin, hair cascading in limp strands around her face, and she speaks in a quiet voice.
“I won’t...I won’t be like him.”
“You could never be. I had a think about it, while I was searching for you, and I won’t let anyone do that to me again. But you shouldn’t have to bear it alone.” She kisses Utena’s forehead. “Just give me your burden for a little while. Just long enough for you to rest.”
