The fever had come on like a thief in the night, slipping past Sanji's defenses while he slept. Now, the world swam in a haze of heat and light, each breath tasting of copper and regret. He lay tangled in sweat-dampened sheets, the fabric clinging to his skin like a second, feverish membrane, and everything hurt with a dull, persistent ache that radiated from the marrow of his bones.
Well, he had it coming, with how many hours he had put into working himself into the ground because of his little restaurant—his pride and joy, his dream come true against all odds (especially his genitor’s disgust; Zeff, on the other hand, his real father, oh. He had been so proud.) He'd worked so hard, so tirelessly, to achieve this, and now his body was punishing him for it.
But it was fine. He could handle a little fever.
What he couldn't handle, however, was Zoro.

"So…" Zoro drawls, suddenly all but looming over him. One of those stupidly thick arms drapes onto the back countertop, casually bracketing Sanji's flank. He feels it in his spine as Zoro drums the wood under his fingers. "You get me anything?"
Sanji sends his boss a haughty glare, determined to not read into it—or give himself away, for that matter. "With the paychecks you cut me? Maybe back in the day I could afford to do that, grandpa."
Zoro flinches subtly, scoffing. "Now I'm so ancient I could be your grandpa."
"You're like twice my age," Sanji jeers, the thrill of a rare upper hand boosting his confidence.
"Little less than that," his boss grouses.
"By two years." Sanji twists the knife, physically unable to help himself. "Okay, daddy. That better?"

He didn’t blame himself for it — not the way he used to — but he did wish people spoke about these things more openly. There were things Daiki did and said that finally had context, but he was no less himself than he’d been his whole life. The boy he’d been, the teenager he became, the man he was right now — they were all dimensions of the same person, snake skins he was shedding off from reaching one milestone to another.
Tetsuya's eyes softened in understanding. "Is that all?"
