But now the buzzing in his belly isn't due to nerves or nausea - it's an eclosion of split cocoons and butterflies wings, the anticipation of what's to come and the disbelief that these things, these once impossible things, rest in his arms right here, right now: white noise, that makes the tips of his fingers numb where they gently twirl scarlet locks; fireworks, that makes his forearm buzz as a blockade of sleep-warm freckles pins it to the mattress.
Promises made and kept and yet to be fulfilled; a harried past and a hesitant present and a hopeful future.
Maybe it's okay, Katsuki thinks, to put a temporary pin in his routine if it means letting himself succumb to a bliss he's been staving off since that chimerical February evening.
Maybe it's okay, Katsuki realises, for the early bird to miss the worm if it means he can enjoy this thing he yearned for long before he was brave enough to give it a name.

“Listen,” Katsuki said, “That lettuce is fucking bolted, it’s gonna taste like shit.”
The old woman frowned. “The man at the stall said this lettuce was good.”
“Well, that man clearly doesn’t know his fucking lettuce!” Katsuki snapped, and she raised an eyebrow.
“I don’t think I’ve ever met a Hero so passionate about…lettuce.”
Katsuki’s face heated up, and he quickly ducked into his high collar to hide it.
“I don’t think I’ve met a Hero with such a dirty mouth either,” she continued with a growing smile, and Katsuki blushed harder.
“Listen, lady, as long as I save people, my language doesn’t matter,” he said, but it sounded a bit petulant.
She laughed, a light, tinkling sound. “I guess not.”

It was a new era, an era of national rebuilding, of forming new bonds between society and its celebrity, baby-faced heroes. The Symbols of Victory and Hope, the Twin Stars of Japan, who did not share blood with villains and disgraced former heroes. It was not personal, Shouto was a great hero as long as he kept his head down and did his job in the background. But Japan had no need for a “Todoroki” to be in the spotlight."
