Eddie will say goodbye to Dustin and Mike at the same time then move on to the rest. Two birds, one stone. And then he’ll be off. Easy peasy.
Except it isn’t, because when has Eddie’s life ever been easy? He drives over to the Wheeler’s place down Maple Street, parks at the curb in front of the house. Stumbles up the front steps and raps on the door a bit. Is so lost in preparing his last-minute improvised goodbye speech that he doesn’t register the fact that Mike Wheeler isn’t the one answering the door until, well—
“Eddie?” Steve asks, eyebrows furrowing.
Eddie gapes at him stupidly.
Eddie is leaving. Steve is doing his damnedest to get him to stay. Also, Holly Wheeler is a fairy princess.

Summary
Claudia makes up a bed for Steve on the living room couch. She’s kind—fussing over him, making sure he has enough pillows and blankets, insisting that he stay here as long as he wants. Steve watches her double-lock the front door and check on Dustin at least five times before she goes to bed. Steve doubts she’ll really sleep.
Steve’s grateful, and it’s comfortable, but he’s not going to sleep, either. Not while Dustin is alone in the other room.
He hopes Dustin doesn’t have any nightmares. He hopes his face doesn’t hurt too much, and that he doesn’t wake up with a splitting migraine. He hopes he isn’t crying himself to sleep. He knows he probably is.

Eddie’s trying to plan the evening’s soundtrack in his head when he catches sight of Dustin Henderson.
The kid is on his own, sitting on the ground outside the school building. His back leaning against the school’s phone box, like he was hoping someone might ring. He looks completely pathetic, crumpled up and small. He’s basically the only person left in the parking lot; even the teachers have long fucked off home.
