Summary
“You could’ve stopped it. Would’ve known what to say to her.” Mike repeats, changing the angle of his head on Will’s shoulder.
“What?” Will tries again, confused.
“Before she- ” Mike stops. “El pulled me in. Into her, her headspace. We talked. It wasn’t enough. I couldn’t tell her what she needed to hear.”
Will tries to tamp down the jealousy he feels at that. Both the familiar jealousy accompanying any conversation about Mike and El’s relationship and a new jealousy, the fact that Mike was the one El chose to talk to in her final moments.
“She knew,” Will considers who he is talking to for a moment, “She knows Mike.”
Mike turns his head back into Will’s shoulder and knocks his head a couple times. It kind of hurts. “You still don’t get it. Will, you always get it, why can’t you just...” he trails off.
“What?” Will tries for a third time, helplessly. He’s starting to feel like a broken record here.
Mike looks up at him, face pathetic. “I didn’t though. That’s the thing. I didn’t love her,” Mike stops, “No, I did. I did, but not like I was supposed to. I didn’t like ... like a boyfriend should.”

Summary
4 years after the epilogue, Mike is struggling. His book isn't getting picked up by publishers. He feels like a failure.
After his dad puts in a favor, his luck begins to turn up. Mike the opportunity to develop his book into a comic with an illustrator. His only problem the job is in New York and that he doesn't have a place to stay, but he'll figure it out.
Oh — and one more thing. The illustrator's name is Will Byers, and he just so happens to be looking for a roommate.

Mike freezes in the doorway and feels the air catch in his lungs. Whether that’s on purpose or not, he’s unaware. Maybe blocking his airway is his body's way of doing him a favor, making him invisible to this conversation that he was very much not invited to. He takes a stumbling step back as quietly as he possibly can, which is difficult in his growing state of panic. He needs to make his escape immediately before being spotted, but all too soon, it’s too late. Joyce redirects her gaze to the doorway at the sound of his shuffling footsteps, and the shock in her expression inevitably prompts his best friend to turn around.

It is entirely Mike’s fault, because even now— present day, 1992, in a hot crowded bar, with a hand threaded through the hairs at the nape of his neck, a mouth moving against his own, Will thinks of Mike.
The memories flash by him like a broken film reel.
Hanging out in castle Byers together.
Fighting over the last bite of food— Will always gave it to Mike in the end.
“Looks like it’s gonna have to be up to us again.”
”It always is, isn’t it?”
Talking late at night over the walkies.
Brushing their teeth in silence in the mornings—
Carlton pulls apart from Will, smiling and looking into his eyes.
Will looks away, flustered, acutely aware of where he really is.
”Well,” Carlton whispers,

Will forces himself to smile.
Carlton lets out a breathy laugh, leaning his forehead against Will’s own.

He's scared of reverting back to the pathetic, lonely boy filled with unrequited love he just escaped from. Will he be able to keep his composure and not embarrass himself anymore, or will he relapse to the hopeless drug called love?
