Summary
Riz is not well-practiced in love. Really all he knows about romantic love is the butterflies, the distinctly different feeling. And he’s not exactly sure what all of it is supposed to mean or what he’s supposed to want, but he’s young and he’s just met Fabian Seacaster who’s got silvery hair and silvery eyes and is tall and handy with a sword and effortlessly cool and doesn’t appear to want to give Riz the time of day, and all he knows is that he falls, and all he knows there is to fall into is love.
So, for simplicity’s sake, he falls in love.
Fabian, to put it plainly, does not.

How Riz and Fabian fall - in love, out of love, from grace, for tricks, fall short, fall apart, fall for each other, literally, figuratively, across four years of friendship.

Summary
Riz understands what Kristen is trying to say. And it would be a lie to say that he hasn’t experienced any FOMO watching Gorgug and Fabian disappear behind a locked door or Fig, Kristen, and Adaine in a tangle of limbs in the kitchen cooking post-coitus breakfast. A lie, but ultimately this too mischaracterizes the situation. Riz, even now that he has discovered the wonders of “me-time,” still isn’t interested in being in the middle of it all. His skin still prickled at the thought of another’s teasing touch or sticky sweat covering his small body. But, as he runs the conversation back in his mind and tries to think of something, anything, to say, his thoughts weren’t entirely innocent. Far from it. In fact, when he thinks back to the catalyst of it all, that moment of seeing Gorgug, and the thoughts that have plagued him since, any pretense of innocence slips away.

He’s coming to some conclusions lately, he realizes. And he’s so, so torn because they confuse him but, at the same time, they excite him a bit, too. He’s afraid yet eager. Wary but curious. These rides are just another point in a set of data that allows him to get closer to understanding what, exactly, is happening between him and Fabian.
It’s a mystery that he’s only just beginning to unravel but between the date nights that aren’t date nights, the school dance, and the rides, Riz is starting to realize something. Fabian treats him differently than he treats his other friends. He realizes something else, too. Riz likes it. He’s not sure why but the warmth that blooms in his chest when Fabian gives him special treatment seems to be a more and more common occurrence lately. It’s comfortable and safe and it makes him breathless, sometimes, realizing that he’s on the top of someone’s list. Maybe not the most important person in the world to them but, still, someone special.
He never thought he would have that. He never thought he could be someone’s first choice.
