Over Ilya’s shoulder, Shane sees the doctor and Wiebe give each other a look, and in a sudden bout of impatient anxiety, Shane ends up saying the words that come to ruin everything.
“Don’t touch me.”

Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time. But he swallows back the bitter truth and replies, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally said, “Okay.”
OR: inspired by the fight in TLG where Ilya tells Shane he can sleep with other men. But this time, Shane actually takes the offer.

Scott turns to assess the threat. Shane assumes he’s trying to decrypt their identities behind the Iron Man mask, talking frantically with JARVIS, and is given nothing in return. “Unidentifiable. Absolutely nothing in my database or S.H.I.E.L.D’s.”
“Let’s just be grateful they shot this fucker down,” Rose suggests. “We can worry about exchanging names and numbers after he’s dead!”
The others turn back to the alien general, loudly and quickly making a new game plan. Shane watches the figure approach until he’s on the business-end of that M249 SAW Paratrooper, staring up at their tactical goggles and grasping for any clue to their identity. The wielder of the SAW stares back, menacing and ferocious, before continuing to fly over cars toward the common enemy.
Shane decides he can, in fact, worry about this when Manhattan isn’t being blown to bits instead of an extraterrestrial war god. He’s excellent at compartmentalizing, something Director Murdock praises him for constantly.
Or, Shane is The Captain, Ilya is the Winter Soldier, and they continue to be soulmates in every universe
