“You ever wonder what God thinks of love?”
Taerae stiffened, hands buried in his pockets, the heat of the evening wrapped around them like a second skin.
He answered too quickly. “Love is from God.”
Jiwoong nodded, like he’d expected that. “Yeah. But I mean all love.”
Taerae didn’t respond. Instead, he kept walking. Jiwoong didn’t push either. He never did. But the silence between them changed—thickened. Taerae could feel it pulsing, like a second heartbeat.
After a few steps, Jiwoong said, quieter this time, “Sometimes I think people confuse God’s voice with their own fear.”
And Taerae—without turning, without breathing—whispered, “Then what do you believe?”
“I believe God is love. And I don’t think love makes us dirty.” Jiwoong answered, soft and certain.
Taerae, a devout church boy, learns too late that love was never the sin.

Summary
Out of the shadows attentive eyes follow his every move, silent steps leaving light imprints on the snow. The trees hide the flash of red and amber cutting through the white landscape, snow still falling like a gentle touch covering the earth in deep stale slumber.
Lijie feels eyes burning holes into his back and he has to fight the urge to stop and look back.
It all happens so fast, too fast. He doesn’t even hear it when it steps forward just at the edge of the trees – everything is silent. At first, they just stare at each other, and then the beast leaps. That's all Lijie sees before he closes his eyes and his body hits the ground in a muffled thud. The beast on top of him.
“You shouldn't be out here alone. Pretty things can get hurt in the wild.” A melodic, low pitched voice sing-songs, tone condescending and the words almost rusky around its edges. “You never know what might be lurking in the woods.”
