Abby says something indistinct over the music. Max makes a face to indicate she couldn’t hear and bends closer. Abby leans in. The ends of her hair tickle Max’s collarbones and she has to remind herself to breathe. Sometimes when you’ve been feeling sick for so long you stop noticing it at all. It’s the same thing with the effect Abby has on her; sometimes she thinks she’s grown used to it. Other times it hits her like a fever spike.
Abby says, in her ear: “You’re so quiet these days.”
Max rears back. The sick feeling is all throughout her body now.

Tom hisses out between his teeth, but he’s a leashed tiger in the summer and she knows it. Her lips curl in a mean grin, and then she’s stepping close, so close he can count the individual eyelashes, the freckles on her sunburnt cheek. Green, green eyes.

The mission had been, at first, just the ALFAs. (His personal acronym for the Acrobatic Less Flashy Avengers: the Avengers that knew the criminal underground, knew how to travel undercover, knew how to investigate and get answers, and knew how to work a stripper pole. Generally speaking it was Wade, Nat, and Hawkeye.)
Well, anyway. Just him, Russian Assassin, and Kansas Assassin. There’d been a comfortable feeling of hey, we’ve all murdered people in the steel-walled van as they’d rattled down a yellow fucking brick road to go get their hands dirty and red.
Unfortunately, the threat - some immortal being that sustained itself on people’s memories - wasn’t so easily neutralized. As it turned out, it was planning an invasion on Manhattan.
This called for the MF Avengers. (More Flashy Avengers. But it was cooler to say MF.)
“She’s still on her monologue. You think she’s done, but she’s not. Believe me, she’s got a few minutes left in her. And anyway, painlessly getting memories extracted from me? Not the worst date I’ve ever been on.”

Potter defends people, he throws himself into things with moronic Gryffindor bravery, and Draco doesn’t have the heart (what does he have the heart for, he wonders) to tell him that he could save so many more people if he applied a dab of Slytherin cunning to his schemes and machinations.
But everyone has always hated Slytherins, the whole school hates him and Pansy and Millie and Blaise and Crabbe and Goyle and the rest of them, green-clothed smirking daggers that they are.
Draco doesn’t bother to explain that Slytherin takes in the battered ones, the one that life has crushed, and sharpens them all into something wicked and strong. He doesn’t bother to explain that they are cruel but they are kind, that the volley of clever wordplay is fun, sometimes. Yes, they are sharp and cruel, but they do nothing the world hasn’t done to them already, and people are so fucking hypocritical.
He doesn’t have the heart to.
