Once you turned fifteen, any attempt at a romantic connection with another would result in either both parties breaking out in patches, hives or even blisters, much like one would react to Poison Ivy or Giant Hogweed, or both parties soul-tied with a plant-shaped mark unique to the couple's relationship, marking their bond.
It was precisely this that kept Hanzo Shimada far, far away from wanting anything to do with it. All of it seemed like a hassle with no real reward. And, he had told himself early on, none of this would be important as long as he could wipe the ground with Cole Cassidy. His neighbour across the street. His schoolmate. The one person he loathed more than anything, and someone who seemed to go out of his way to make his life a living hell.

Cole Cassidy, as it turns out, is a long-time friend of Genji. He was there when they brought him near death into an early Overwatch, probably saw him get built back up from a chewed-out husk of a man into something new, something… different. Cassidy saw him turn from a deadly weapon into a deadlier one, got to see him built and unbuilt, got to know him long enough to figure out what it means when the green lights lining his armour dim, when the vents at the junctures of his shoulders release air, when the internal processes of his suit kick up in a whir. What the different angles of his head tilts mean, the approximate facial expressions he is making under the visor. How much of him is left under the metal plates, made anew, and unmade again.
It is only natural, then, that Cole Cassidy wants Hanzo dead.

Summary
Cole Cassidy finds himself in the past, in Hanamura, at the most dangerous temple in Japan: the Shimada family temple.
But his greatest danger, Papa Shimada (Sojiro), is away on a business trip. In the present, Cole is in a relationship with Hanzo, and he has the chance to meet Hanzo in the past, before Genji's assassina.
But all of this stems from an immature desire to escape the feud Cole finds himself in with Hanzo.
