Summary
On the third night sleep came in bits and pieces. Unable to fight it off any longer, Mikasa drifted in and out of restless slumber, slamming her eyes open with a gasp every hour, until finally, it wasn’t so hard to keep her eyes peeled.
“Mikasa.”
She startled to her left. She hadn’t even noticed Eren stir. But he was fully awake, legs dangling off his bed, his wide eyes blinking at her.
“Haven’t you slept?”

Summary
If Ellie was anything other than nervous to the point of shitting her pants, she might laugh at the way Joel’s entire expression slackens with shock. To his credit, he recovers quickly, and folds his arms across his chest, leaning some of his weight against the rail. It’s such a Joel stance that Ellie finds herself mapping out how she would sketch it, tracing the details of him with her eyes.
“Well that depends. What movie are we watchin?’”
At that, a real smile splits Ellie’s face. “Curtis and Viper II.”

Then: through the eyes of a teenager, peeking behind her blinds into his room on hot summer months when he didn't wear a shirt, eyes lingering on his lips when he pulled away his cigarette.
Now, she is so much older, but he is older still, and the gap between them feels ever widening. But her desire to close it only feels more desperate.

“I’m not sure how this is supposed to go.” She hangs her jacket on his bed. There’s a little tie at her back that holds her dress together, and his eyes linger on the bare skin underneath it. He shoves his hands in pockets, so he doesn’t do something stupid like tug on the string. “Do I hug you?" She asks. "We’re going to have sex, so I’m not sure how I should start things, to be honest.”
“We don’t exactly go from point A to Z like that.” Eren swallows, cringing at the clinical, matter-of-fact manner in which she states her purpose. “There are some steps in the middle, you know.”

An hour from dawn, just as Ellie catches the first strains of fluting birdsong, she hears that rustle again. She keeps her eyes squeezed shut and holds very still as Joel’s boots crunch their way over the six feet of dead grass in between their sleeping spots; as he breathes in once, noisily, like he wants to say something; as something heavy and warm drops over her body.
Joel’s jacket doesn’t smell very nice—like him—but it’s better than nothing.
