It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.
It was supposed to be planned around his schedule- aligned with winter break, maybe. Or even after he’d retired. He should’ve been with his partner, whoever they were; he’d never dared hope it would be Max. He should’ve been wrapped in their embrace, murmuring hushed words of excitement to one another as they waited for the minutes to pass and a result to show on the test.
They should’ve found out together. Ready. Eager. Full of love.
Instead it was like this: alone, curled on a cold bathroom floor, a painfully impersonal PDF staring at Charles from his phone. The only positivity to be found in the situation was sitting in the results column of the file, neatly slotted next to the word pregnancy.
The email. The result. The loneliness. It was all too much. Charles began to cry once again.
At the top of his screen, a response popped up with impeccable timing.

“If you stare any harder,” Sebastian mumbles from beside her as he pours another Gin Tonic, “you’ll actually turn him to stone.”
“If he touches Charles any more,” Max hisses, mirroring Sebastian’s words, slicing the innocent lemon before her with a little too much vengeance, maybe, “I’m going to spit in that asshole’s drink.”
Her eyes are glued to Charles. The brunette is in the middle of her set, giving a lap dance to an older guy that Max wants to explode with her mind. That douchebag has his hands all over Charles’s waist, pulling her closer and closer, sliding his fingers almost all the way beneath the strings of her panties.
“I fully support you,” Daniel adds, his face a disgusted grimace as the Australian’s eyes are also glued to the car-crash of a lap dance before them. Max has never loved any man as much as she loves the Australian at this moment. “Spit in his drink.”
