Summary
“Hey, Rhys.” Everything stops, the world caught on the groove as his life changes. He can hear Feyre's smile, her nervousness. It had been so long since he had heard her say his name. He wants her to do it again; he wants her to never stop saying it. It could be the last thing he ever heard and he would die a happy man.
His voice comes out so thick with grief that he barely recognizes it as his. “I thought I had lost you forever.”
“That’s a silly thought,” she says, like it's so simple. Like it's normal, being separated for so long. Like his fears were unfounded. “I’m right here."
The dream ends, but wrapped up in his blessed, overwhelming relief, he doesn’t recognize it. Finally, finally the world makes sense again.
Feyre isn't dead. Rhys grieves like she is.

When Mor called him in the middle of the night, begging him to take in her friend, she left out some key details. Namely that said friend was an injured omega who smelled like heaven. It wouldn’t have changed his mind about taking her in, but he would have appreciated a heads-up, as opening the door and finding a bruised and cowering omega on his doorstep had his instincts roaring to the forefront. If Rhys had even a sliver less self control he would have yanked her into his house before triple locking the doors to make sure she was safe and protected with him forever.
Suffice to say, it was not an auspicious start.

Admittedly, the liquor did feel a little different from the wine. Colors began to glow and the air smelled sweeter. Something warm and wet was beginning to blossom in my stomach, a thick syrup pouring deep into the space between my hips. Arousal drifted its finger across my neck and suddenly everything looked delicious. Alis had told me to keep away from the wine, Rhys had told me to keep away from the liquor. I was starting to feel like everyone was horrible at giving advice.
With the third trial looming, Feyre learns to embrace the reality of her mortality, allowing herself to let go of some of the dogmas that threatened to ensnare her to unhappiness in what she believes are the last few days of her life. Meanwhile, Rhysand grows frustrated when he can’t find an explanation for the liability that is his increasingly debilitating attraction to Feyre.
