“In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave…”

Aerion snorted as his father reminded him. Right, that was the first of them, wasn’t it?

“Do you remember a single one of the fucking oaths, boy?”

    “Why should I?”

    OR

The one where Aerion is demoted and forced to squire for Ser Duncan until the hedge knight chooses to knight him again. But what happens when an unlovable man meets an unstoppable force?

“If I break my oath, even for you—” Dunk’s voice cracked. He thought of Ser Arlan’s face. Of Egg’s trust. Of everything he’d built himself to be. “What would that make me?”

“Mine.” Aerion’s fingers slid to the nape of Dunk’s neck, tangling in his hair. “It would make you mine.”

There are two kinds of distance between a common hedge knight and a Targaryen prince: the height that separates them, and the morality that should.

    Summary

In the aftermath of Baelor's death, the Targaryen family splinters. All Maekar wants is to hold the remnants of his family close, but even he knows that Aerion cannot stay here, not with Baelor's ghost still wandering the halls.

Dunk has had enough of princes for a lifetime, but Baelor's memory will not let him turn away from the wreckage before him. When Maekar begs him to take Aegon on as his squire, he accepts, and when Maekar begs him to look after Aerion, Dunk cannot turn him away. He is determined to fulfill his duty as Baelor's man, and to do it well, Aerion be damned.

Aerion's life crumbles down around his shoulders in the span of a single afternoon. The Maesters say his leg may never fully heal, his own father cannot look him in the eye, and his family wishes he had died in his uncle's stead. When he finds himself exiled to Lys with only the brother who hates him and the knight who maimed him for company, he is certain he's being sent off to die.

Fortunately, the gods have other plans.

    Summary

As he's made to yield, Aerion’s scent pierces through the sludge of the fight, an unmistakably earthy and burnt thread that couldn’t come from the rain. In a rush of adrenaline, instinct takes over.

“I withdraw my accusation,” Aerion shouts but it’s too late. Dunk bares his teeth, no longer tasting his own blood but Aerion’s call. He yanks Aerion’s head to the side, ignoring the yelp as he stares at the column of bruised skin.

“What the—” Aerion starts and before even Dunk can catch up with what his own body is doing, his teeth pierce into flesh. Aerion screams and tries to move but Dunk has him trapped, the fury of their clash still pounding in his heart. A lesson. The boy needs a lesson. Dunk’s mouth floods with blood as on the field, in front of the hungry crowd, in front of honourable knights, in front of the lords, he claims Aerion Targaryen’s impending heat for himself.
