Cold as a sonofabitch in the early mornings was New Hanover, bright open and smiling with yellow-green worn teeth in the light of May. Big palm-sized green leaves; ten thousand times more cold than Colter because it was unexpected. Charles stayed in camp often and when the weather was warmer he hitched his shirtsleeves up and chopped wood for hours; on the few times Arthur was back in camp he always seemed to have an eye on Charles.
He seemed less mean out of that snow and out of that big blue coat; the warmer airs mellowed him, maybe, like boarskin under rushing river streams. Seemed happier in the warm weather.

That was it. Chuuya was going to murder this human.
“Ow!” the man shrieked, pulling his fingers out of reach of Chuuya’s furiously snapping pincers. “I was kidding, little crab—I was kidding—!”(Or: Chuuya tries to save Akutagawa from the consequences of the mermaid prince's terrible decisions, and in the process winds up making some questionable choices of his own.)
