Summary
But there were a few that Henry had figured out for himself. Rules so unspoken that he’d wager Hans wasn’t even aware of them. Rules about what sort of relationship they were allowed to have with each other.
His ma and Radzig had loved each other, but the difference in their stations had prevented them from marrying. So too was friendship made complicated by class.
Hans was Henry’s lord. He wasn’t his friend. Henry wasn’t allowed to consider him his friend.

Summary
Saidin needed to be cleansed.
It was an idea that had been niggling at the back of his mind for a while, and more insistently now that he was starting up this school. Training male channelers wouldn’t do the Light much good if they went mad before the Last Battle arrived. It was high time to stop just reacting to the problem and to instead address the root of it: the Dark One’s corruption.
But how could it be removed? In three thousand years, nothing had been done about it. How could Rand think of a way to do it, if three thousand years’ worth of people far smarter than him hadn’t managed it?
Maybe it’s not about intelligence, murmured the voice in the back of his mind. Maybe it’s about power. In three thousand years, nobody has been stronger than us.
Rand didn’t let himself turn to see if there was a figure standing beyond his peripheral vision.

Summary
Aviendha sat with her nose pressed against the window pane, utterly fascinated. All had been normal when she had gone to sleep last night, but now the entire world had turned white.
Snow. Elayne had described it to her before, saying that it was like sand but pure white and made of cold water, but Aviendha’s attempts to imagine it paled in comparison to the reality. It was wondrous.
She felt a shift in her new bond with Rand. Sleep into wakefulness. “You’re cold,” he said, voice warm and rough with sleep. “Come back to bed.”

Summary
On the way out of the Waste, Rand spent a great deal of time with Aviendha. The Wise Ones had assigned her as his teacher in Aiel ways, and Rand wouldn’t be surprised if they also wanted her to spy on him, but if that was the case, he didn’t think she was in on it. Aviendha was almost shockingly forthright and blunt—not a deceptive bone in her body.
Her bluntness was difficult to get used to, after months of his life spent revolving around Lanfear.

Summary
Then Rand had come to them in Caemlyn, and after they’d all confessed their feelings and Elayne had bonded him to both of them as their Warder, he’d noticed Elayne wearing the bracelet and asked about it. And Elayne had said—
The heady feelings of love returned and a new bond had made her carefree and daring, and she’d joked that perhaps, in order to fully finish meeting their toh, Rand and Aviendha might show her how they’d spent that night in the snow-hut, so that she would no longer feel that she’d been left out or missed something important.
And now here they were.

Summary
“You might have met them while you were in Caemlyn,” Rand said. “One of them is Elayne Trakand, the Queen. And the other is Aviendha of the Taardad Aiel, who was living in the palace with Elayne the last time I saw them.”
Months ago. It had been months since he’d last seen them, and there was a permanent ache in his chest from how badly he missed them. An ache he was only letting himself feel now, after months of forcing it away into the Void.
This news did seem to startle Tam, far more than the revelation of two partners had. “The Queen,” he repeated. “So then, you’re about to become a father?”
Rand stared at him. About to become…? “What are you talking about?” he said, heart in his throat.

Summary
There was nothing Mat hated more than having to sit still indoors for hours at a time—Rand was willing to bet that he was being fussier about it than the twins were.
Rand smiled to himself and wrapped his arm more snugly around Aviendha. They were having a lovely and relaxing morning so far. Not being an official part of the royal family meant not having to sit for any portraits.

Summary
Aviendha had come over too and was peering over her shoulder. “That does not look correct,” she agreed. Elayne burst into tears, and Aviendha hastily added, “But there is no need to weep over cakes, shade of my heart.”
“Bloody pregnancy moods!” Elayne blubbered, wiping her eyes in annoyance, but she couldn’t stop crying. “Everything’s ruined, we made Rand wait all this time for nothing, and now he’s—b-burn me, he’s coming this way!”

Mat had never had a single direct conversation with Aviendha before the day she beckoned him away from the tents to speak privately and proceeded to end his life with a single sentence. “I have noticed your interest in Rand al’Thor,” she said.

Summary
Then his gaze fell upon a familiar blonde head and jean jacket right next to the tartar-sauce-filled pool. Dangerously close, in Fabian’s opinion.
He frowned. Adaine was absolutely blasted, and she’d never even gotten tipsy before in her life, let alone drunk, so she was probably even worse at handling being blasted than a normal person would be. She should not be standing that close to a pool full of tartar sauce.
“Fabian?”
Fabian startled and turned away from the window to see Ivy looking at him expectantly.

Summary
Rand sat on a makeshift throne in the Heart of the Stone of Tear, the sword Callandor balanced across his knees. The vast chamber had been mostly destroyed in his battle for Callandor, but Moiraine had said that was all the more reason to invite Tear’s nobles to come to him in this place—it would impress upon them the Power he wielded, and the fact that they owed their city’s safety to him.
And so one by one, all the nobles of the city were stepping forth to kneel before him. To pledge their fealty to the Dragon Reborn, swearing on the Light and their hope of salvation and rebirth.
A shepherd on a throne, ruling over lords and ladies. What absurdity the world had come to. Rand let out a soft chuckle, which earned him several concerned looks.

Summary
Mat burst into Rand’s tent, covered in blood and thoroughly disgruntled. This was all Rand’s fault! Mat hadn’t wanted to be anywhere near the battle for Cairhien and had tried to leave, but Rand’s bloody ta’veren pull had dragged him right back into the thick of it, and now somehow he had an entire army looking to him for orders, and as if that wasn’t bad enough—
“What is that?” Rand said, raising his eyebrows at the wailing bundle in Mat’s arms.
“Your fault, that’s what!” Mat said. “I found some bloody idiot giving birth on the battlefield while dying of a stab wound, and now I’m stuck with this thing!”

Summary
When Rand woke again, morning sunlight was streaming in through the small round window in their cabin on the ship. He shut his eyes and burrowed further under the blankets, not ready to get up and face the day just yet.
But Mat must have noticed that he was awake, because he reached over to start playing with his hair. The bond was thrumming with affection, though there was something sad underneath. There was always something sad underneath these days, either from guilt over Rand’s wound from Falme or worry over what the future might bring.
Over what the future would bring. The Last Battle was coming, and Rand would die there, unless the madness and saidin’s corruption took him first. Rand would die, and he might well take Mat with him, thanks to the Warder bond between them.

Summary
Every night for the first week, Lewin cried himself to sleep, or else Alijah did, or else they both did. For warmth as well as comfort, they always slept close together, curled up and pressed into each other until they managed to drift off into restless sleep.
They didn’t talk much, just sat together by their fire at night and followed the wagons during the day, from a distance. Watched them, hoping somebody would come over to them and tell them all was forgiven and they could return home.
Nobody ever came.
And so they began to turn their thoughts towards the future. It was time to accept that they could not go back to the way things used to be—so what new path would they forge?

Rand wrapped his arms around his drawn-up knees, memories of his ancestors crowding his mind. One in particular. The one who had been entrusted with the sapling of Avendesora by Latra Posae Decume. The one who—
Rand glanced sideways at Mat and hastily looked back out at the city, feeling himself blush.

Summary
“Fine,” Mat said. “You’re in a worse noose now than I was, that’s for certain sure. Some men might envy you getting to have two women, but burn me if you didn’t wind up with the two worst ones in the world.” More glares from the Maidens.
“Elayne is wonderful,” Rand said defensively. “And Aviendha is…” He tried to think of one positive adjective to describe her and came up blank. “Well, she’s not as bad as all that.” She would warm up to him eventually, wouldn’t she?
“Either way, I don’t envy you,” Mat said. Then why did he seem so cross?

“If I told you, then it wouldn’t be private,” Elayne pointed out, just as Aviendha said, “We were discussing whether men receive pleasure from having something inside them.”
Elayne felt her face immediately flare up. “Aviendha!”
Birgitte laughed. “So, Rand had a good time last night, did he? You did have the bond masked for quite a while.”
Elayne wanted to protest that it was none of Birgitte’s business, but what ended up coming out was, “So it’s true? Men do like…that?”

Mat licked his lips. “I…I think you can do anything you set your mind to, my Lady,” he said.
“That is correct,” Elayne said, and she let go of him with a small shove backwards. “Get up. I am going to take a firm hand with Rand, and you will watch me, and then you will beg forgiveness for daring to question my capabilities. Understood?”
She was shocked by her own boldness, but the pure lust in Rand’s bond and in Mat’s eyes was heady and intoxicating. It made her feel in control, as if she could do anything. As if she could have the Dragon and his general on their knees begging her for mercy and loving every moment of it.
