    Summary

Puffy braces as the engines charge and Foolish scans the incoming data as fast as his processing power allows. A blue light on the console blinks, which means that the weapons on the Aegis are prepared to intercept. “Weapons hold but be prepared to return fire,” she orders, not wanting to blow up a ship if it is friendly.

“Visual incoming,” Vos calls from where he has been monitoring the Aegis’s sensors and the information flooding to him from the forward ships of the fleet. On the main ship display an overlay lights up with an enhanced image of the source of the signal.

It’s a small craft designed for orbital flight, but not atmospheric, without wings or a tail, or anything to use the wind-drag to keep it airborne.
It isn’t recognisable to anything that Puffy has thus fought against, but considering Foolish’s scans and the incoming knowledge that the shuttle holds no offensive weaponry—nothing at all save for strong shields and a basic propulsion system that doesn’t seem suited to orbital or void manoeuvres—

Or: Tommy trusted them. They weren’t Human, so he would’ve never expected them to betray him just the same.

    Summary

Tommy watched in growing apprehension as his handler left the room. The other three aliens all moved to the side to seemingly watch.

“What’s going on?” Tommy asked. “What do you want with me?”

None of them replied, but they did look enraptured with him. Like he was some kind of exotic animal in the zoo. He curled into the blanket as much as he could, wishing he could sink through the floor.

What were they even staring at?

    Bunch of creeps.
    -------------------------------------------------

Tommy thought getting abducted by aliens meant he'd be tied to a slab and dissected. That... didn't happen. Instead, they coo, stare, and pamper him like a treasured pet. If only he could get them to see he was sentient. Easy, right?

    Summary

Wilbur carefully scooped a bit of puree onto his fork. It was perfect, from what little he actually managed to eat of it. Creamy, with milk and amazingly seasoned. And then there were steamed broccoli and baby carrots. He remembered hating baby carrots, once upon a time.
But those days were long gone. Wilbur was hungry enough that he’d eat anything placed before him.
Anything, besides the meat and the sauce.

    Summary

Tommy doesn’t know what the others see when they look at him.

Maybe, at first, all they see is his exhaustion that clings to him like a second skin; something that he hasn’t truly been able to shake since waking from Daroda’s destruction, clawing back his mind from a sleep so deep it had taken him several hours to truly wake. Maybe they barely see the solder burns that mark up his arms, the deep shadows beneath his eyes, the harsh glare that’s permanently fixed itself to his face as he throws himself over and over at the problem that stands in front of him. If it was an enemy, he’d have no problem beating his fists into it until it was either dead or destroyed, never mind the destruction he’d bring upon himself.
But the obstacle that stands in front of him is not something that simply needs breaking-killing-destroying.

Or: War cannot be outrun, only delayed.

    Summary

**I do NOT consent to my fics being available through lore.fm**

Tommy pinched his lips shut, continuing to glare at Wilbur through the budding tears in his eyes. He understood fully well what Wilbur meant — how could he not with the man’s history — and had it been maybe ten years ago, he would’ve been inclined to agree. But it wasn’t. It’d been fifteen years since the last recorded battle between the Empire’s Navy and any pirate crew of notability. Years of peace that had lasted for almost as long as Tommy had been alive, and now he was done living in fear of an era past and soon to be forgotten.

”The war has been over for years,” he whispered. ”The only one stuck in the past is you and I’m sick and tired of my life getting ruined because of it!”

    ...

15 years ago Wilbur Soot of the Naval Army single-handedly brought an end to the age of piracy before spearheading the Empire’s passage into the golden era of peace.

15 years later, and 16 year old Tommy Innes — the secret son of Wilbur Soot — has to grapple with his dad’s unwarranted fear of an age already past. But is it really paranoia if they're really out to get you?
