"There's more writing on the bottom of the bowl," Shadowheart said. She was crouched down and pointing to markings on the underside of the creepy, bloodstained altar.
"Is there? What does it say?" Gale asked, shuffling on his knees to get closer to where she was pointing.
"He's going to crawl around like this and then complain about his knees all the way back to camp," Astarion muttered, sounding half amused and half exasperated. Karlach chuckled just a little, because he was right. Talk about being your own worst enemy: Gale versus his knees and back.
"It says 'within each self a monster'," Shadowheart read off of the underside of the bowl.
"Oh, this is very interesting," Gale said. "The blood spilled in the bowl will touch the other phrases, but not this one. I think that marks it as optional. I've heard of something like this before. Azuth set out trials for young mages where one could mark certain incantations with chalk and leave others blank, indicating how difficult a challenge one was willing to face."
"This would make the trial harder?" Shadowheart asked, straightening. "A more difficult test?"

It had been just two weeks since he was hauled out of the flop house he was holed up in, huddled in a pile with the other whores on a dirty mattress. Their Pimp kept them on leash made of heroin and threats of bodily harm.
The Heroine did most of the work.
“A victim of sex trafficking, not a criminal” His lawyer had argued. Pushing for rehab rather than criminal charges for prostitution. He sat in court in an ill-fitting button up and much too large slacks, accentuating his nearly skeletal frame to further sell the narrative, not that the judge needed any convincing.
He was clearly a victim but he felt like a fraud.
Astarion had been in and out of one rehab or another since he was a teen, until his mother finally gave up on trying to help him and he fell in with prostitution and Cazador.
The Tower: rehab center and Dude-ranch was his last chance to get clean and live.

Canon Compliance: Canon happened. Like 1000 years ago or something. This Gale and Astarion are not the originals, but this Astarion's playing the original in the musical, and this Gale's a distant relative of the Gale of Waterdeep. And they're pretty much what you'd imagine 20-year-old modern Faerun versions of themselves would be.

Summary
Gale is a survivalist romance author who writes about love after the end of the world. He's a divorcee who has plans B through G for power failure, but no Plan A for getting laid. Astarion is a former artist who decided to winter in the northern Michigan lake house he got in his divorce. He's not exactly rural-winter ready. When a massive blizzard knocks out power across the community, Gale—seeing Astarion's dark McMansion—trudges through the blizzard to prevent his idiot neighbor from freezing to death, but they'll both keep each other warm in the end.
This low-stakes, cozy, modern, the-Ant-and-the-Grasshopper AU softens both Astarion's and Gale's traumatic pasts to gaslighting, controlling exes who leave them lonely until they discover their strange neighbor is a better fit than they had imagined.
Note: In case you are unfamiliar with the fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper, the Ant prepares for winter by working all summer, while the Grasshopper wastes the summer singing and having fun. In the oldest tellings, the Grasshopper gets cold and hungry in the winter and goes to the Ant for food and shelter, but the Ant scolds him and turns him away. In our version, of course, the Ant is a bit kinder 😉
