Valery has fallen in love quickly and foolishly with men like Boris before, so the act hardly registers. He is already there, drowning his folly in liquor, and he has no expectations or even shame. Shame at something so small seems meaningless in the face of Chernobyl. What is idle, fruitless desire for an untouchable man when plumes of ionized smoke still pour from gutted rubble to blacken the sky?
