    Summary

    An established-relationship story.

"If you will not have a care for your own sake, you might think of me," I finished, rather angrily. "You will break your health and shorten your life."

"My dear Watson," he said, "that line of argument will not serve. One of my greatest comforts in life is the moral certainty that I will predecease you. You will do without me a deal better than I should without you."

It was such a dreadful thing to say that for a few moments I sat speechless in my chair.

    Summary

This was archived at Sacrilege! sometime in the mid-1990s. At the time I was using "Irene Adler" as my pseudonym for the Holmes fiction. Sacrilege! is, alas, defunct; so I am reposting those stories here.

The year after the Return, Holmes is working hard on a blackmail case and won't tell Watson who the client is. Watson does a little digging, and learns a lot of things that he really should have known already. The rest is history.

Watson should not have been surprised that Holmes rejected him.

Because, he'd thought, how in the world could a bird such as you, magnificent, brave, bright and beautiful ever love a mere fish like myself? The slow, dull, limited creature you've chosen to sing your song to?
