Summary
Johnny stands at his open wardrobe, arms folded across his chest, and scowls at his clothes. His duffle bag is open on the bed behind him, half packed for his weekend leave with Simon.
The hangers rattle as he shoves them aside. A pair of jeans, faded and worn, drops to the floor, and he picks them up, regarding them for a moment before he tosses them back in the wardrobe in disgust. Would it have killed him to get some nice clothes? A couple of soft jumpers, maybe a blue one that would bring out his eyes? Or maybe a button-down shirt? No, too fancy. What does he think this is, a date?
Johnny laughs nervously, the sound bordering on hysterical.

“Hey Stevie.”
He froze. The voice had come from the shadows to his left, a voice so familiar yet so different. It was a little rougher now, hesitant, the accent washed from the words.
But Steve would have known that voice anywhere. “Bucky.”
A shadow detached itself from the rest, walking forward slowly. Cautiously. The stillness of his moments seemed to shatter the space between them, poised and on edge as if he were still ready for a fight.
Steve swallowed past the lump in his throat. “How are you, Buck?”
“I’m not armed.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Bucky’s chin tilted up a fraction, but he kept his hands where Steve could see them. “I’m okay.”-or-
Every year on his birthday, Steve watches the fireworks over the city, only this time...he's joined by a ghost (figurative, not literal).

Soap just shivers on the cot and says nothing.
While he gets the fire going, Ghost takes stock of their supplies. He’s got almost a full IFAK between the two of them, cold water from the hand pump that he can warm, some dubious looking rags, and a half-gallon of what looks like homemade vodka.
Not ideal.
He glances over at the cot. Soap’s eyes have drifted shut.

John looked up, his expression guarded. He gave a slow, cautious nod. They didn’t talk about that often.
“The doctors needed decisions. And I had no one. No next of kin. They had to convene a board. It was… clinical.”
John’s face had softened, the frustration from earlier replaced by a pained understanding. “Kyle…”
Kyle waved an impatient hand. “I’m not asking for a church wedding, John. I’m talking about a piece of paper. At a registry office. So if one of us ends up in a hospital, the other isn’t just… some guy. So we have the right to be there.”
or: a death in the family reminds Kyle of the importance of formalising their bond. Unfortunately, John might not be as open to it as Kyle hoped.
