Gale was slipping away.
He'd made it, he'd managed to get back to his classes, and he was still slipping away from John. Eating less, sleeping less, falling apart at the seams. John could hardly bear to watch it. Worst of all, after all they've been through, he can't risk further alienating Gale by judging him unable.
One snowy night, though, a reckoning comes. John brings Gale home. But limitations are limitations - and sometimes they can't be overcome the way we so desire.

Then, there, crowded between a pair of medics already cutting him from his harness, Bradley spotted him. The flight suit was torn, blood seeping dark and ugly at his side. Mav’s helmet was gone, face pale beneath streaks of grit.
Bradley dropped to his knees beside him. “Dad—Dad, please. Stay with me.” His hands hovered, useless, shaking so badly he couldn’t even reach out. He couldn’t stop talking, couldn’t stop begging, his voice trembling like it had when he was twelve years old, standing at Carole’s grave.

My first fanfic! Ever! Please be nice to me I’m learning :,)
This may not be 100% accurate since Andy Weir is so goated when it comes to realistic world building and I am not science brained enough to understand half of what he writes. I’m mainly basing things off the book but Rocky and Grace act more like they do in the movie in my interpretation. I kinda just rolled with it from there. Also, I haven’t researched a ton into human starvation so some of the info may not be super accurate, but hey I can always change it later if not! (I think… Idk man I’ve never posted anything here before). Anyways, I hope you enjoy! Apologies in advance for subjecting you to my ADD fueled angst brain, but at least we can suffer together! :D
And no, he doesn’t die! Though he may wish he had at some point…

Why the floor?
Because stubborn as he is, the increasing risk of falling out of bed and doing serious damage to himself was greater than his pride. He's curled up next to one of the panels of Rocky's habitat, and Rocky sits on just the other side of the xenonite. Rocky rarely leaves his side now. It must be very boring for him, watching Grace just lie here.
Lying down hurts, but it's the only thing he can do.

Grace and Rocky sometime in the last few months of the journey to Erid.
