“Okay,” Will says, and throws the door open. “Surprise!”
Mike opens his eyes. Then–
“Will,” he says, and it comes out a bit strangled. “Is that a puppy?”
This is a bit of a stupid question. Mike isn’t dumb. He knows what a puppy looks like. The thing in Will’s hands– a little wrinkled and brown and very covered in fur– is definitely a puppy.
Will brings home a dog. It goes about as well as expected.

“Are you offended that people think we’re dating?”
“No,” Mike says immediately. “Of course not,” because, again, he should be so lucky.
Will’s baffled expression does not change. “Then why would I be?”
“So– okay, fine, whatever. Should we, like, tell them to get their heads out of their asses and that we’re not– um– dating, or–”
“I think,” Will cuts in, “well. You know what would be funny?”
Honestly, Mike doesn't know what he thought being Will Byers' fake-boyfriend would entail, but he definitely didn't think it would involve this many ugly Christmas sweaters.

Mike sighs. “I didn’t mean to. I am not annoyed that he’s with us sometimes. And…” he looks down, like he’s searching for the right words. “And I’m glad. I’m glad. All of us –the Party, I mean, are spending time together, more than ever before. Everything is okay and everyone is fine and finally that chapter is closed but still, things lately have been weird and I just… I don’t know. I wanna go back to before.”
There’s something almost sad in Mike’s voice now, and his eyes are looking at everything but Will. Like he’s ashamed, like he did something wrong.
“Before the Upside Down stuff happened?”
Mike is silent for a second. “Yeah.” His eyes fall to Will’s necklace. “You could say that.”

Mike and Will haven't been spending time alone ever since Carlton and his stupid matching key and lock necklaces got in the picture, until Mike shows up to the Byers' house one evening.

Summary
At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

Mike knew he was an idiot. Oblivious in a number of ways. Emotions slipped past him all the time, hiding in plain sight until it was spelt out for him, loud and clear and undeniable. But the things Will had said that day wouldn’t leave Mike alone.
Because when Will had been talking, when he’d mentioned that boy he used to like, the one who wasn’t like him… Mike had felt something twist sharply in his stomach. Had felt the realisation stop his heart.
He could have sworn Will was talking about him.
And that thought, small and impossible and suddenly unavoidable, refused to leave him alone.
