Summary
He drives to the airport with an unshakeable urge to pull over and turn around. He smokes four cigarettes in a row before he boards the plane, then chews an entire pack of gum on the flight to try and cover the worst of the smell.
He exits the airport half-hoping that Shane has chickened out of the whole thing. Then he spots him, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel in the most boring suburban dad car Ilya has ever had the misfortune of laying his eyes on, and he’s so happy to see him that his legs feel unsteady beneath his weight.

Summary
Ever since he can remember, Shane has loved the idea of soulmates. Not the dramatic versions from movies or myths, but the quiet certainty of it—the knowledge that once you were close enough, you would hear your soulmate’s thoughts in your head. Not guesses. Not hopes. Proof. A voice at the edge of your own thoughts, easy and familiar, promising understanding without effort, connection without translation.
He doesn’t know exactly what he expects his soulmate’s first thought to be. Something gentle, maybe. Something reassuring. What he does not expect is to lock eyes with Ilya Rozanov across the ice and not understand anything at all.
or: Shane and Ilya know they’re soulmates the moment they meet. It doesn’t make anything easier.

Summary
This was different. This wasn’t hockey, or a competition, or a well-honed skill. This was her chance to welcome Ilya to their family.
The five times Yuna Hollander opened her heart to Ilya, and the one time Ilya found a home within it.

Summary
It doesn’t occur to him until he’s sitting in his moms guest bathroom, with a CNN makeup artist putting just enough concealer on his face to not completely hide his bruising (because it plays well, of course, if people can see he’s injured while doing this vulnerable thing), that he hasn’t fucking let Ilya know he's about to come out on national television.
Well, fuck, Shane thinks, staring at his own blinking reflection in the mirror blankly.

Summary
And then, just as Ilya is about to fish out key, fit it into lock (because what if Shane is not okay? What if Shane is inside, and he needs Ilya, like he did on the ice that fucking day, when Ilya couldn’t even touch him) fucking finally, door opens, and Shane is there, and then?
Ilya blinks at Shane. Shane blinks at Ilya.
The fucking baby Shane is holding in his hands, bouncing its little body absently, just so it giggles, a tone of pure joy, fixes it big eyes on Ilya, and chirps cheerfully, “Da da!”
Ilya is best hockey player in the world. He’s had his bell rung countless times, is no stranger to taking a hit and feeling like world is spinning beneath his feet.
The sight of a baby nestled in Shane’s arms, like it belongs there, smiling at him, hits him like two hundred pounds of muscle have never managed, leaves him reeling.
