Summary
“Why are you helping me?” Vash wheezed.
“It’s our law,” the stranger shrugged, unhooking a water skin from his belt, tossing it at Vash’s feet. It sloshed, Vash licked his lips.
“What law?”
“The law. Only the strong survive, and the gods favor them for it.”Vash's village is attacked in the night, his mate stolen. Left for dead, Vash pursues his would-be murderers into the jungle, embarking on a quest to avenge his village and save his mate from a dire fate. He discovers a massive new world outside his homely origins, full of new faces, customs, sights and sounds and smells. He does what he has to, to get close, he just hopes his efforts aren't all in vain. His only advantage? They greatly underestimate him.

Knives knew that he could fix Vash. He also knew it was a feat that would require careful precision.
He could have just wiped Vash's memories, but he didn't want a blank person with his brother's face.
He wanted his brother as he should have been.

Or: Knives successfully alters Vash's memories so that he trusts Nai above everyone and everything else. It's a perfect happy ending. (Except for Meryl. And Wolfwood. And, well, the rest of the human race.)
