Summary
the sun rose the same every morning and set the same every night. The same watercolor pallet would paint the sky and wake Frank up from his slumber, just as it would lull him to sleep. it was repetitive, but it was safe. stable. it was as sure as sugar storm would blow up her bangs and kick her hooves when you tried to groom her. And Frank liked it that way. That is, until two city kids from New Jersey come to work at the ranch, and everything Frank knows is somehow not as stable as it used to be.
School provided the same routine every day, the same slaughter that Gerard had to endure. He felt bad for making his brother have to defend him, for having to be the school freak, but there was an itch that wouldn’t go away if he wasn’t the way he was. The only thing he wanted more than to disappear was to have something change. To have Mikey make friends other than himself. To change schools. To run away. Anything to stop the torture that this brought. So, when he’s offered a way out, albeit unusual, he takes it. Living on a ranch on the other side of country has to be better than what he has.

“You’re all right,” Frank reassured him. “I had brain worms to begin with.”
Gerard laughed so hard, Frank felt kind of proud of himself. “I know,” he gasped, wheezing for air. Strands of black-and-teal hair flopped into his face as he gripped the edge of the table for support. “Shit, sorry, I just had a really vivid mental image of what your self portrait would look like.” He gave Frank a sidelong look. “Swearing is definitely okay when it’s just us, right?”
Frank tried not to think about the familiarity of the words. Just us. “Yeah, duh.” He raised an eyebrow, feeling a smile tug at his lips.

When Frank meets Gerard, a 20-year-old art prodigy-turned-TA in his senior year of high school, sparks fly as an unusual friendship is formed. They may have bonded over a mutual, hilarious hatred of Romeo and Juliet, but Frank's not laughing anymore when spring rolls around and Gerard is climbing up a rope ladder to his balcony in the middle of the night. Then Gerard quits his job, citing romantic complications, and the only thing Frank knows is that he knows nothing at all.
