“I can’t make sense of it,” Aldo murmured against the heel of Thomas’s hand, still pressed against the side of his mouth. “How is it that I know, in my bones, without a question or a shadow of a doubt, that I’m an ordained member of the Catholic Church - and yet I am just as certain that I belong to you.” He paused to consider this, as if he had not just flipped Thomas’s entire perception of reality upside down. “I don’t understand how that makes sense.”

Shortly after Pope Innocent XIV is elected at the conclave, Thomas Lawrence resigns, leaving the Curia and religious life abruptly.
About a year later, Aldo Bellini comes to visit, bringing with him unanswered questions and a lot of complicated feelings.(The names and backstories are aligned with movie canon, but I was also influenced by book characterizations and passages.)
