An artist by day and a drill sergeant by night, that was how Clary would describe her mother. And they did share some interests. While her mother’s style was very different, Clary also shared her love of art. In fact that was about the only time should could stand to be around her mother these days, when they were painting together.
Most people only ever saw Jocelyn as a painter, a free spirit. They never saw her training her daughter night after night, the curtains drawn, the furniture pushed to the edges of the living room as they attacked one another with knives. Training knives, different from the real ones Clary carried with her everywhere. Her mother had trained her to defend herself, and insisted she keep the training up and sparred with her daughter six out of seven nights a week.
So was it any wonder that on night number seven, Clary took any opportunity to escape that she could?
In which Clary has a slightly different but still non-shadowhunter upbringing, a very dedicated street art career, and meets Alec as her first introduction to the shadow world a few months before her inheritance.

After one of Valentine's experiments wipes out the humanity in Jonathan, who almost kills Clary, Jocelyn and Clary escape from the hidden Morgenstern mansion and find half-hearted shelter in the New York Institute. Leaving her father's tenets behind, Clary is introduced into the free and equal Shadow World. But the Morgenstern weighs heavily on Clary's shoulders. The Clave as well as almost every Shadowhunter mistrusts her. All her efforts to start a new life attached to the Shadowhunter's values seem to fail, when she gets to know Jace Herondale, the son whose family was murdered by her father years ago.

Jonathan looked down at his own hands, and noticed they were trembling. Clary's thought slid inside his brain like a parasite, leaving a throbbing, open wound behind. He had thought he was in the clear, that she had forgiven him. How long had she been unhappy with him? How long had he been making the problem worse without knowing? At this rate, it wouldn't be long before she couldn't stand him at all.
All his ideas about asking Magnus to undo the spell evaporated into nothing. It was better this way. It was better if he knew what they were thinking, so he could get better. So he could at least be tolerable enough to be kept around.

He had thought he’d known pain. He was wrong. He couldn’t even cry out. His mouth filled in blood and the air was sucked out of his lungs. It felt as if he’d been severed in two, and he had. Jace’s blow had been just as he had described. It was ironic. Poetic. He had thought he knew what a broken heart felt like, but no, now it had been pierced, and it burned, and ached, and stung, and every other type of agony went through him. Jace’s hand was shaking behind him. It was as if he was talking without speaking. Jonathan turned his eyes towards him. It took every ounce of his energy to respond.
“I guess father was right.”
Jace staggered back. He wished to reach for him. He wanted someone to hold him now, that he couldn’t keep himself standing. He felt his legs give in, didn’t know where he was falling to until his back hit water. His mind was becoming fuzzy. Thoughts wouldn’t materialize entirely, instead there was only a constant feeling, glimmers of memories, fear, resentment, jealousy.
Longing.
Regret.

Jackie woke up feeling overwhelmingly cold. Her limbs felt like lead, her body was shivering, and her head was pounding incessantly. She groaned and was immediately taken into someone’s arms, wrapped around her body protectively.
“I got you Jax,” a voice said gently.
Jackie fought to open her eyes. When she finally did, she met deep brown eyes that held so much sadness and worry and relief. Looking to her right, she met a head of blonde hair and eyes that shone with a strong protectiveness.
But Jackie was tired, her head hurt, and she had absolutely no clue what was going on.
“Who the fuck are you?” she asked, and then she promptly passed out again, hearing only a gasp from both girls before darkness took over.
