"You're really beautiful," Mydei mused absentmindedly in Kremnoan, staring at Phainon. "Someday, I'll gain the courage to tell you how much you mean to me."

Phainon paused. "What did you just say?"

Or: Mydei develops a habit of confessing to Phainon in Kremnoan. It's not like Phainon would understand him anyways, right?

Khaslana spent his life being dependable, holding his family together, choosing restraint over desire and silence over honesty. When the cost of that loyalty finally became too high, he made a choice that shattered the very thing he tried to protect.

    Summary

Some people can say Mydeimos, last prince of Castrum Kremnos, has a betting problem.

Mydei, however—in the most politest of terms—is in it to win it.

In not so polite terms, he calls everyone else critical of his betting skills losers. He admits that it’s a bit toxic of him, but that’s to show that he doesn’t take bets lightly at all, and more that he honors each bout with utmost dignity and sheer competitiveness.

So the moment Mydei sees the emblem stamped on the flags of the city-state, he turns to Hyacine and says, "I bet you three balance coins that that's our monster."

Hyacine sputters, even as Little Ica eyeballs the emblem and agrees with a solemn, "Doo doot."

There's a unicorn. And a fertility festival. Mydei's a virgin and that shouldn't matter until it does.

"Do you think I could get his number?" A passing student asks in a hushed whisper.

"Ugh, perish the thought. You don't stand a chance anyway. None of us do. The guy might be perpetually single, but he’s practically married to his work. You should see the way his eyes light up when he talks about Kremnoan history. Unnatural, I tell you. No one should be that in love with the idea of a dead nation or its erstwhile—and also dead—King.”

If they only knew how true their statement was.

Phainon lives on in hopes of meeting Mydei again. After hundreds of years of waiting, he finds Mydei as a stray cat. They live happily together, but their happiness is short-lived, cut short when Mydei passes away unexpectedly.

Years later, Phainon opens an academic library, hoping to catch a glimpse of Mydei again, but terrified that doing so would spell Mydei's demise. But some things are inescapable, bound together by fate. And Phainon learns that some curses are made to be broken.

    Summary

“My humble apologies, Imperator,” Hysilens says, her voice rasping unpleasantly—still so unaccustomed to the human tongue. She clears her throat, pressing a hand to her chest. “To see that fish in the blackness where the sun’s rays dare not shine… it is as a star; radiant in the depths of the sea. Not unlike your blazing light, which guided me to shore.”

Cerydra takes a long sip of her glass, only to fall silent. Golden ichor drips from the corner of her mouth, and Hysilens resists the urge to reach out, and…

“Were you truly so allured?” Cerydra murmurs, shattering the silent moment almost off-handedly—which is strange—no action of the Imperator's is impromptu in the slightest. She is an angler, a chessmaster. She is patient, composed, and she does not err lightly.

But Cerydra blinks as she looks to Hysilens, as if she too is struck with momentary surprise at her own tongue. Her breath is sweet, and warm against her siren’s scales. And Hysilens nods.

“Yes,” she whispers, for none but her light to hear. “I was.”
