Elfriede didn’t thank her, though she didn’t expect it. Instead, she tracked Dominique’s movements with wary eyes as she set the supplies on the bed, mirroring her body movements almost unconsciously—keeping a standard distance between them to the extent that she could, huddled against the wall. The room had a bed, a chair, but Dominique had yet to see Elfriede use either.
Stubbornness or caution? It could be either—some part of Dominique wanted to say the former, though Elfriede was not in a position where one weighed against the other really mattered. But Dominique liked to know these nuances about others, or she was at least so used to it, it felt the same. They were similar feelings—enjoyment and security. They both required a certain confidence in how a situation would play out.
