The man was so charming that I could not find it in myself to resist leaning forward. It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down – each speech an arrangement of notes in improviso. On reflection over the years I would think back and hear again the singing compulsion of his voice; a promise of a gay sweet song just a while since, and that there were gay, exciting things hovering in the next hour.
