Summary
Carol Sturka, a novelist and English professor, struggles with grief and isolation after the death of her wife. Upon her return to work, Carol discovers she is now forced to share her classroom with Zosia Rybak, an ESL instructor. “Well, first of all, I’m Carol,” the woman said. “I’m sure you have a lot of questions, probably some that I can’t answer, but I’ll do my best. Uh, where do you want to start? Do you want me to just… tell you what’s been going on for the past three months, or do you want to ask me specific questions and just let everything come up when it comes up?”
“Three months?” Zosia asked, shaken by this. She was still struggling to understand what Carol had to say, her English being a little less sharp than it usually was with her brain all foggy from apparently three months of lost time.
“I guess I’d better just come out and say it,” Carol said, taking a deep breath.
“Could you say it slowly?” Zosia asked.
“Yes, right,” Carol said. “Language barrier. Sorry. I’m used to you… to them being so fluent in… well, in everything.”
“This isn’t helping,” Zosia said.
“No, it wouldn’t be helping,” Carol said, self-efacing.

carol finds a way to conditionally unplurb zosia and they get to know each other before the other plurb figure out what she's up to
