The gymnasium has been entirely decorated in the colors of Notre-Dame High School's football team, the Knights. Everywhere on the walls, photos of the teams over the years remind visitors that time has passed, that high school days are long gone.
It doesn't take Eddie long to find the photograph that interests him. 15 years ago, the Knights won the national championship for the first and last time. Of course, the photo of the winning team is featured prominently. It's bigger than the others, surrounded by gold and navy blue banners. He goes out for a swim in the river, to rinse off the worst of the day’s sweat, and then comes inside to the warm bath that Caius prepared for him. It’s scented with lavender and rose, the water turned milky by oats - good for Al’s hardened hands, his weathered skin. Caius has already had his own bath, but he washes Al’s hair for him, untangles it gently and extricates hay and wildflowers. Forget-me-nots like to cling, and while Caius doesn’t understand how a weed that grows on the ground winds up so high that it filters into Al’s hair, he finds it charming all the same.

“Auntie Masae will be upset that I let you get hurt. So will my mom.” Langa grabs a couple cans of soda from the refrigerator and hands one to Reki before stalking off towards his bedroom.
Reki shrugs his shoulders before falling in line behind the taller boy. “Dude, I hurt myself with my board all the time. She expects it by now. It’s not like you did it on purpose. It’s all part of the process.”
“If you say so. I still feel bad though.” Langa opens the door to the room they’re temporarily sharing and flops down onto the bed. His back rests against the headboard and his long legs are stretched out in front of him.
