Summary
After the death of his son, there is nothing left for Dean other than his garden market. His days are tough, the nights are tougher, but at least there's a reason to get up in the morning. And with the new boom on do-it-yourself garden magic, his business is going okay.
Amidst the passing of time, there is only one thing that distracts him from functioning like a normal human being: Diagonally across the street, in the display window of that traditional Herb and Potion shop, plants are dying in masses.
Storming in to confront the owner goes differently than he imagined, though. Castiel Novak may be the kind of guy who wears old-fashioned mage robes and keeps his shop in sweltering heat, but he's also a talented herbalist, the kindest soul Dean has ever met, and utterly beautiful.
Not that Dean is ready for anything other than friendship.
(Not that Cas doesn’t get sick a bit too often.)

It could be argued there are worse ways of meeting the love of your life than measuring their inseam for the fitting of a prosthetic merman tail, but if you asked Castiel about it, he’d probably disagree.
Secretly being a merman in Hollywood was difficult enough, but working on the cheesiest tv show to ever exploit the worst tropes about merfolk - thank you, Gabriel - with annoyingly attractive soap opera star Dean Winchester was not how Castiel had invisioned his life going.

For a while now, Dean has been having dreams… Well, okay, so maybe normal dreams don’t involve waking up in a cold sweat, nauseated and clammy but too hot all the same, feeling like an absolute piece of trash that’s been baking in an abandoned alley a few weeks too long. Maybe that makes them less dreams and more nightmares.
So, yeah.
Dean has been having nightmares, and those nightmares are usually about Cas.

“Okay,” Dean says, shoulders squaring like they’re going into some sort of battle. “So you’d—make the cut.”
“Yes.”
“And then the grace would come out of me.”
“Correct.”
Dean nods. He goes to one knee, then the next, kneeling in front of Castiel. Digging a pocket knife out of his front jeans pocket, Dean opens it up and flips it around handle-first, holding it out at the same time that he tilts his head for ear to meet shoulder, his neck bared.
Castiel’s mind suddenly goes very blank, with a ringing in his ears.
“Well?” Dean asks, his voice only slightly shaking. “You waitin’ for a written invitation?”
