Summary
Reaching out, he rubs circles by the back of her neck, taking in the dim flame before him. She'd always been bright, enough so to catch the eye of everyone around them, an ember that refused to die out no matter how much you tried to. A candle that could only continue to eat itself up till there was nothing left but a wisp of fire, fighting to stay lit; fighting to keep going.
A fire so self-contained there was only one person it could burn.
If only they'd let him carry that torch, too.

Summary
The Zoë family was not one to stand out too much from within a crowd. Middle-class, two parents working jobs that allowed them the relief of being– at the very least –financially stable in an age where money was hard to come by. There wasn't much about them that caught anyone's eyes, and if you were to ask, they'd tell you that was the point. Normalcy was the goal, and they wouldn't have had it any other way.
Hange was the only one out of them who'd tell you outright that she thought the idea of normalcy was 'stupid'.

Summary
Hange didn't see it that way, though. Not at all— these weren't the ramblings of a fumbling soldier, it had too much sense attached to it. With all the time the professor spent on deciphering the nearly incomprehensible writing, they'd learned so so much about the equipment left completely unmentioned throughout the manual.
Whoever previously owned this had a mind of their own, one she wanted to dissect piece by piece till there was nothing left but answers.

Summary
It wasn’t exactly easy to follow her usual routine, nowadays. Not with the severity of what she's seen, the journal tucked into the pocket of her jacket weighing heavily on her. Maybe it was dumb to have a written record of stuff she wanted no one to hear a lick of, but could you blame her? There were only so many ways to cope with such things like the very fact your imminent doom was guaranteed at some point.
or; what if Hange had reoccurring dreams about her death in Odiha? and what if, even with that knowledge, it doesn't change her fate in the slightest?

Summary
Levi doesn't know what it is about these kinds of moments. It happens at such innocuous times, like now, when sunlight catches Hange’s profile as she gazes into the horizon. Sunlight turns her windswept hair bronze. Maybe it’s the way hissing waves fill the silence at the end of her sentence. Or maybe it’s how the air tastes like spices as Hange holds the railing to keep from falling overboard while the ship rocks. A piece of his heart is outside his body.
