Summary
“The party,” he said, and Amy’s heart leapt into her throat.
She shuffled closer to him, unable to hide the tingle of nervous excitement building inside her at the prospect of finally getting her answer.
“The first one,” he clarified unnecessarily.
She had known the whole time that something had happened in those blank, memory-less hours lost to the ether, though how significant it was only became clear to her after the second party, when Shadow’s behaviour had begun to change.
“What happened?” she asked, trying and failing to rein in her eagerness.
“We…” - he cleared his throat and looked away - “kissed.”

Weeks ago, Amy drunkenly kissed Shadow at a house party.Now things feel different between them. Amy, with no recollection of the kiss they shared, cannot understand why Shadow is avoiding her. Shadow, whose memory of the event is so vivid that he swears he can still feel her lips on his, struggles to cope with his newfound feelings.
Shadow's patience for keeping secrets grows thin, and the two have a much needed talk. One which may just change the very nature of their relationship.

“She’d be proud of the person you are now, Shadow,” she speaks again, firmly, sincerely.
“Maybe. Maybe not,” he responds, the words coming out more bitter than he had intended. At his side, he hears Amy draw in a measured breath.
It hardly mattered, in the end. She’d never know the person he is now, and that might have been the thing that stung the most. Amy considers his words carefully, a heavy silence settling between them. Shadow turns to face her, and he sees a flurry of emotions flash across her face before settling on a sad, subdued smile.
“I’m proud of the person you are now,” she says finally. Her eyes shine with an admiration so genuine it almost brings a blush to his cheeks.
Almost.
You’re the reason I'm the person I am now, he thinks, but does not say.

He leaned back, folding his arms over his chest and casting his gaze to the floor with a hum. Somewhere in that busy mind of his, she knew he was sorting through every piece of information about himself he could think of, and carefully mulling over which secrets were simply too precious (or perhaps too dangerous) to give away. Trying to figure out a secret to tell that doesn’t reveal too much, but was still enough to satisfy her curiosity.
He leaned in close, and she could smell the alcohol on his breath.
“I sleep with a dagger under my pillow every night,” he said finally.

Wartime was taking its ghastly toll on the Alliance's beloved leader. Byleth sometimes felt as though she were the only one who noticed. What better way to help him relieve some stress than to help him indulge in one of his most treasured pastimes? And if she managed get him to open up to her about his closely held secrets in the meantime, well, that was just a bonus.

Gintoki didn’t have a word for the lights in the sky that sometimes appeared over the battlefields he scoured for food when they emptied of the living. He heard them before he saw them, great big booms that echoed across the wastes like thunder and had him scrambling for the nearest cover out of instinct. He held still there, branches tearing at his cheeks and exposed skin, and hardly dared to breathe in the following silence. He flinched with every following roar until he found the courage to lift his head in one of the breaks in sound. Colors burst in the sky, red and orange like sunsets, even though the night itself was black and clouded.
It seemed less scary then. Maybe the closest thing to beauty he had back then, though it made the sky fill with grey smog that blocked the stars. He sat in the brush with twigs in his hair and watched explosions bloom in the sky like flowers until he no longer flinched at the sight and sound of them. He watched them with wide eyes and parted lips until the last light finally burned out and left him in pitch.
