    Once adopted by the old fishing village, Downriver, she was then taught to sound out vowels and hold a pen accordingly. She has always written her name all the same: Běi, straight and direct and blunt, the strokes the aftermath of how quickly she writes her name, as quick as how she wants things done, and then Dǒu, the more complicated character for six-year old Beidou, who already had a loose tooth from diving in shallow waters mouth first. It took her a while to get the hang of writing the second character as accurately as she wanted, sounding it out as she practiced the strokes.

    Or: Beidou has always been destined for greater things, even when all she had was her name.

    "But I won't let you." Yu turns around, spatula in one hand as he crosses his arms over his chest. Yosuke tries his best not to focus on that area at all, even if a detective should be vigilant and observant of all things around—"Do you want anything while you wait?"

    "You, uh—" Yosuke licks his lips. His hunger is convincing him he's smelling cheese instead of caramelized onions and a variety of spices. "You can make a grilled sandwich, can you?"

    Or: Yosuke wants his best friend has wanted his best friend for years wants a grilled cheese sandwich.
