Summary
She swallows hard, not even realizing where she is until Maddy’s surprised yelp sounds way closer than it should.
“Rue, what the hell are you doing? Why are you outside my window at—” She looks at the clock on her vanity— “2:30 AM?”
Maddy has a polka-dot robe on now, clutching the two sides closed to keep out the chilly night air.
Rue has stepped onto Maddy’s lawn. In front of Maddy’s window. Where Maddy can definitely see her.
Stupid.
“Uh—” she starts, scrambling, “Fuck, I didn't—I mean, it wasn't—”
Rue’s hands move in useless little gestures, like that might somehow explain things. Maddy just watches her, arms crossed, her mouth shaped suspiciously like a smile. She cuts Rue off before she can dig herself any deeper.
“Rue.”
“Yeah?”
“Do you need a place to crash tonight?”
When Rue accidentally ends up at Maddy’s house, comfort shows up wearing someone else’s perfume, and Rue pretends that doesn’t mean anything.

“So, guess you’re headed back to Wakanda?”
“I might,” Bucky says. “Honestly, I was banking on going back to Brooklyn. Closest thing I’ve got to home, so, just made sense. But seeing as I’m a fugitive…” He glances over at Sam with a wry smile. “Why, what about you?”
“Rhodey found a spot,” Sam says. “Some safe house on the outskirts of the city. Hasn’t been used in a few years, so, gonna head there and stay low till the pardon is official. Or try to, anyway.”
Bucky is quiet for a minute before he turns to Sam and asks, “Want some company?”

Summary
“You’re gonna have to come in eventually,” says Sam, then he takes a deep breath and steps away from Barnes, back towards the club. “But it doesn’t have to be now.” Barnes’ eyes widen, and he goes utterly still. “I’ve got some conditions though, if I’m gonna let you go.”
A year after the helicarriers go down, Sam finds not the Winter Soldier, but Bucky Barnes, who's trying his best to live and not just survive while on the run. Sam finds him and keeps finding him, and eventually, Sam finds himself too.
An alternate take on canon where Sam and Bucky have been secretly meeting up since after CATWS.

“I won’t laugh.” Bucky straightens out both his back and his expression and scoots closer, knee colliding with Sam’s own. He keeps it there; it feels hot and solid, even through the kevlar. “C’mon, I promise. Just tell me.”
Sam turns it over in his head for a long moment. Swallows hard. Rubs his palms across his thighs.
“Okay,” he says, looking away. “Do you believe in ghosts, man?”
Bucky laughs, the asshole.
Sam has been haunted all his life. This is the first time he's ever thought of telling anyone about it.
