The thought of who he might be paired with, compared to mild-mannered, dependable Lewis, made his skin crawl.
As the season wore on, the speculation only grew. Pundits promised answers by summer shutdown. Fans demanded certainty. George waited. Nothing came.
Then, come Zandvoort, Mercedes announced an FP1 outing for Toto’s bloodthirsty Formula 2 protégé in George’s car despite Lewis being the one he was meant to replace, which felt personal, frankly.
And on Friday night, in front of a home crowd drunk on orange smoke and seawater, Mercedes finally made it official.
18-year-old Max Verstappen would be the next driver to wear the Silver Arrows.

“I hear this place has excellent service.” With a wink, he was gone, strolling up the stairs and into the lush warmth of the hall. George slipped into the car and put it in gear. What a night. And it was only getting started.

“So,” Alex smirked, cornering him in their little office, his feet propped up on George's desk. “Still offering full service, eh?”“It pays the bills,” George mumbled, ignoring his friend’s knowing gaze. The paddock has become a cesspool of influencers and celebrities since Netflix came in with their cameras, but it still rubs Max the wrong way, how they prance around knowing nothing about racing and offering their inane opinions.
“It’s fine,” he dismisses, gripping the ball. “I’m good at what I do.”
“I’m sure you are,” George says, flashing another cookie-cutter smile. “Good luck on Sunday, then.”
