Adores him with every staccato beat of his heart so surely, so intently, that he’s positive that if he were to be hooked up to a polygraph machine and be asked if he loves Shane Hollander, the shape of his pulse as he answers “yes” would coincide with the rhythm of Shane’s bashful laughter anytime Ilya tells him that his freckles are stunning.

It’s funny, though. He can almost see Irina’s brand of humor slip through the cracks, like sunlight peeking past the gaps in their blackout curtains. He can almost hear her laugh. Gone as she is, she lingers and clings to him like cigarette smoke.

He tried, during those lost years, he tried as hard as he possibly could. Tore his eyes away from it, threw punches and insults, breathed through the scent of mint. And yet, he fell asleep at night dreaming of freckled skin under his lips, spearmint toothpaste on his tongue anyways. The undying, ever growing affection had curdled into something ugly but it had never died. Even if Katsuki stays dead, it won’t die with him. It’ll live in the sticky-note he stuck on Izuku’s lunch yesterday that he knows the sentimental nerd kept, it’ll linger like bad cologne on the notebook he’d given Izuku when he ran out of pages.
His affection won’t have to outlive him, though. Because he’ll walk this purgatory of endless doors created by a curse of a quirk a million times before he lets Izuku lose the best thing about him. That perpetually heroic, perpetually bleeding heart.

His mom won’t stop badgering him about confessing to Izuku or whatever. Confessing sounds corny as hell.
She doesn’t understand that he likes what they have. He’s content with the sleepovers and the hand clutching his arm on the train and the curls brushing against the skin under his chin when they sit on the couch.
This is the one instance he’ll ever settle for less. Insisting on more might lose him Izuku and that’s not— he’s fine with less. He can make do. He’ll make do even if it tears him apart from the inside out and sends his guts spilling on the floor. He’ll make do until it’s his heart on there beating one name, three syllables.

Izuku shrugs, “I’ll probably do it independently, if anything. I don’t wanna take a slot away from someone who deserves it more than me, you know? I’ve been missing in action for over half a decade. I'm… rusty.”
Izuku watches as Kacchan’s eyebrows furrow in the rear-view mirror, glancing at him in confusion, “What?”
“If I’m gonna join your– any agency, I’m gonna have to earn it. And besides– Kota-kun would be a better fit as of right now I think. I see how hard he tries to beat you every time you lead a training exercise and I know you do too.”
“Are you a fucking idiot?” Kacchan pulls over right by a convenience store and whips his head around to look at Izuku, “Are you seriously fucking stupid?”

He’s balancing on the ledges of the flooded sandbox with his arms out, trying not to fall when a familiar looking red, blue and yellow ball bounces over the ledge and lands in the water with a splash. It bobs on the surface of the water, floating around before finally settling in the middle.
“Oh no!”A whiny voice exclaims, sounds of gravel crunching beneath little light up All-Might themed velcro sneakers getting louder and louder, “My ball…”
Katsuki points at the ball, “That’s yours?”
The kid— he has dark green curly hair, sparkling eyes and cool little dots scattered across his face, concentrated on the bridge of his nose and his cheeks. Katsuki doesn’t know what they’re called and it pisses him off.
A lot of things piss him off.
