“No, you wouldn’t believe me, would you?” Auguste laughed, as loud and bright and clear as if Laurent were tugging on the church bell ropes himself with the sound vibrating in his skull, and waved his hand- the one holding a half smoked Marlboro Gold cigarette between the fingers. The smoke wafted out of the open window, curling in the cool breeze and ruffling the two pigeons that huddled together on the stoop. “I don’t mean metaphorically, my darling brother. You might not believe me at first, but I promise it’s true.”
Then he had leaned forward, the mischief in his eyes warming into something brighter, and with a smile that made his dark blue eyes gleam, he told Laurent a secret.
