Summary
He sits collapsed on the floor, panic taking over him, his ribcage constricting. He knows that pain, has felt it for days after the drift.
There are no Precursors in his head.
He stands up, gently, slowly, using the wall to support his weight at least slightly, keeping it off his bad hip. He finds the cane and stumbles through the bathroom door. The light blinds him after he hits the switch on.
From the small dirty mirror, a beloved face of Herman Gottlieb stares back at Newt.

Years later on the 1st of January 2025, there are only two of them left, doing everything while pretending not to panic. Well, Newton is pretending; Hermann never panics as Hermann never feels anything at all. There is a hole in the middle of him where the soul is supposed to reside and it went missing even before he managed to graduate secondary school. He gave up on locating it well before the apocalypse.

God, does Newt not want to speak.
He doesn’t want to dredge up old aches for Hermann. He doesn’t want to drag back the sort of thing that Hermann must have tucked away or stitched over ages ago.
Hermann doesn’t need a seam ripper. He needs sutures, and scar tissue, and-
“The precursors broke me up with my boyfriend,” Newt says, and then he swallows and corrects himself, because that’s not quite right, because they used his mouth to do it. They used his mouth, and made his ears listen as Hermann broke down and pled for answers over the phone, actually begging, and yet Newt refused to give them to him, because the precursors wanted to break Newt and this was the answer. This had always been the only answer to shatter Newt Geizler- taking away Hermann Gottlieb and shattering them both. “No, scratch that- they made me break up with my boyfriend.”
And across the table, Hermann’s pen drops against the table, fingers going slack.
(Ten years ago, right as Newt and Hermann were finally trying out a relationship, the precursors made Newt break up with Hermann.
Now, Newt is free of the precursors' influence thanks to a rather painful kiss, and he has to pick up the pieces.)
