“It’s just water,” Lara says, flushing anyway and thinking of how she had practically leapt out of the jeep when she had been dropped her off, barely stopping to hastily roll up her shirtsleeves and rinse off her hands under the sink on her way to find Sam. She hadn’t even paused to dry them. “You know. Same thing you’ve been splashing around in all day while I was hard at work, straining my back and sifting through the sand for maddeningly long hours.”
“Pfft, I’ve seen your back,” Sam says, wrapping her arms around Lara’s torso demonstratively, reaching down to tug the tan linen shirt free from where it had been tucked into Lara’s pants, then sliding her hand underneath, below Lara’s undershirt to drag up her slightly sweat-damp skin, “it can handle a bit of strain. Anyway, you’re not fooling me, you big baby. Spending hours digging around for old pieces of pottery is, like, your favorite thing in the world.”
“Second favorite, maybe," Lara says, kissing her again.

A pained wince flashes across Vi’s face but she nods, scraping a bloody-knuckled hand over her face and sniffing hard once. She spits out a gob of red-streaked mucus and speaks down at the spot where it lands between her feet. “Thanks.”
“Can I take you home?” Caitlyn asks.
Shame rises off Vi like hot steam. She hunches in on herself again, runs a hand through her hair, still refusing to look up at Caitlyn. When she speaks, her voice is tight with strain. “You've already done a lot, Cait. I can have Powder—”
“Vi,” Caitlyn cuts her off. “You can tell me no, if you don’t want me to take you. I can go back to my flat and leave you with your brother and sister. But I am asking you — can I take you home?”
