“What do you want?” The faint sound of heavy, static distorted, breath echoes from the receiver. A pause, no answer. “Fine. If you’re gonna be a creep I’ll hang up.”
A shocked laugh, as if Albert is delighted by his boldness. “Wait! Wait, hold on.”
He sounds different without the mask and Finney thinks maybe being dead has freed this man more than either of them anticipated. Maybe Finney has been freed too, in more ways than one. The honesty in his voice makes Finney hesitate and he carries the phone as far as the cord will reach so he can plop down on the recliner. He feels eyes on him, as he does most of the time these days, and carelessly drapes his legs over the arm of the chair.
“Okay. So talk.”
