Steve looks over; the guy is standing in the darkness, and when he steps forward Steve’s breath catches in his throat. A few inches shorter than Steve, dark hair falling flat and limp around his high cheekbones, eyes permanently flickering between blue and green and grey and framed by long eyelashes, sharp and bright even in the gray, artificial lighting, only one arm, pulled protectively around himself.
“Bucky?” he whispers incredulously.
or Bucky is a hooker who stumbled into prostitution in desperation and Steve is an achingly lonely artist who has spent four years missing his high school sweetheart and maybe they never stopped loving each other.

Summary
A slice-of-life detailing snippets of recovery for a certain Bucky Barnes, aided by those who love and cherish him. Bucky hasn't been outside Steve's apartment since he was released by SHIELD and deemed 'safe'. He doesn't feel very safe. How could he possibly go outside, when that would mean the sun on his skin, fresh air in his lungs and anything but keeping himself locked away? He already doesn't deserve the love Steve has for him, or the sweetness of oatmeal-raisin cookies with too much sugar in them, or the softness each morning seems to bring. Except, maybe. Maybe he might possibly perhaps be allowed to let himself enjoy and appreciate things. Maybe he might possibly perhaps be allowed and even encouraged to do nice things for himself. Maybe he might possibly perhaps be deserving of love.

Still, getting out of bed only seems to get harder every passing year no matter how much effort he puts into taking care of himself. Matt can’t be too surprised. After almost two decades of sprains and tears, Claire likes to remind him he’s lucky to still be walking. Or breathing.
Foggy always said this job was going to be the death of him. Matt can’t believe he never stopped to think about what it might mean to live with the consequences.
