It wasn’t an accusation. Just a statement. Chuuya couldn’t possibly understand, and she didn’t blame her for that. It was nice of her to attempt to reassure her, but ultimately futile. She’d all but made up her mind to pick herself up and pretend this conversation never happened when she felt another—more desperate—tug at her sleeve.
“I don’t,” Chuuya admitted with a sigh. “Tell me more? I won’t interrupt. I promise?”

A lump forms in Goro’s throat, and it doesn’t budge even when Ren asks him:
“So, Akechi, could you tell me more about Voltaire?”
And he does.
The evening passes far quicker than he could ever anticipate. It’s in tidbits of knowledge and immersive debates, chess moves that barely make sense anymore, because he’s a little too lost in the low timbre of Ren’s words and the soothing notes of their coffee.
It hits differently, dreadfully, that this is the last time. And that he maybe, possibly, wants this time to last forever.
