Summary
Every time the bell chimed and Akechi’s sharp, guarded frame entered the shop, Ren’s eyes would lock onto him. It wasn't the suspicious look the others gave him. It was a look of profound relief, like Ren had spent the last year holding his breath and Akechi was the first lungful of oxygen he’d had since the world changed.
The problem was that Akechi looked like he was constantly waiting for someone to punch him. He sat in the booth with his shoulders up to his ears, nursing a coffee like it was poison, looking miserable while Ren tried to make small talk. It was painful to watch. And Ryuji hated it. Not because of Akechi—though the guy was still an arrogant prick—but because of the way it made Ren’s shoulders drop when the conversation inevitably stalled into awkward silence.
So, Ryuji decided to be a bro. If Ren wanted this guy around, Ryuji was gonna make it happen. He’d put in the work. For Ren.

Day One: Interrogation Room
Over the years, a lot of things change. People leave, people return, and our bodies just keep getting older. The ways in which we deal with our pasts change, as well, new skills, new breakdowns, new twists on the old horrors.
But those pasts don't change. That room, featureless walls and steel furnishings and the crack of a broken bone. The muffled sound of a gunshot. Blood in the gutter.
It's not easy. But they do, both, get used to it.

Summary
“Why would you feel stupid?” Yu asked.
Yosuke shrugged. “If it were the other way, she probably wouldn’t care so much, right?” he asked. “If it’d been me on that phone line, I mean.” He laughed. “Wow, this isn’t a good place to be. As embarrassing as it was, it’s sort of good my Shadow came out when it did. Something else to focus on, at least.”--

[“But I also saw the way she talked about you at Junes,” Yu went on. “I think on some level, she did care about you. At least, she must have cared enough about you that when she heard her Shadow talking about how much she hated you, she had to deny it.”]

“All he said was dress up,” says Ren. “That could mean anything.”
“Well, I think you should take Lady Ann as your inspiration!” says Morgana. Morgana knows nothing about dressing up because he is a cat. A guy cat. But he’s being supportive. “She always looks relaxed and comfortable, but beautiful and perfect too!”

[“I’m just saying,” says Ren. “You didn’t pick a person you could hurt. You picked someone you’ve never actually managed to hurt no matter how hard you tried.”]

Summary
“Oh,” Mensah said.
I followed her gaze to her lion daemon. Sadik was so large he took up most of the rug and dwarfed the coffee table where, I realised with a jolt, my own little beast had been hiding.
I rounded the coffee table. Beast had buried itself deep in Sadik’s mane, pressed up against his neck. It blinked back at me slowly, almost smug, and then pressed even further against Sadik. Another fission of heat ran through my chest, like I’d been made to swallow hot coals.
