So far, none of the assassins had come from Root. Sai was unreasonably grateful for that fact. Nothing would break his loyalty to Shikako, but she would be very unhappy if Danzo killed him.
She'd probably be even more unhappy if Sai emulated Uchiha Itachi. He still would because alive and unhappy was much better than dead.
And dead would be better than anything Danzo might do to her if he actually ever saw what she was.

I was almost sure that Mom pulled strings to get this mission assigned to us. I mean, she wouldn't have to reach very far for it, just as far as telling Dad she thought he should put us together. It was the shinobi equivalent of locking me and Shika in a room together until we worked out our issues. They even assigned Ino to the same mission so that we had a mediator.

Shikako knew something was wrong when, instead of the seal blowing up in their faces, they were deaged by 3 years and teleported somewhere. Stuck in modern Japan for the next three years due to needing to age back up to their original age, they decided to enroll in school just to have something to do. Little did they know that Team 7’s Luck was about to hit them again. This time, in an annoying way instead of life-threatening.
All Shikako wanted was to play shogi against someone who didn’t fold within the first five minutes, was that too much to ask?
