Nothing he had said enticed Haru into talking to him, and it is far past the point where Makoto can pretend there’s nothing wrong. This can’t be fixed by empty smiles and quiet glances. It can’t even be fixed by a real race.

When Makoto turns to face him, it takes exactly four seconds for Haru to do the same. It’s almost funny, how such a tiny moment can contain an eternity.
He took it as a sign, and inhaled through his nose. Distantly, he can hear a rocket launch into the hazy sky. The firework show has begun.

Knives kept the enclosed letter to himself, yet another entreaty on the young Emperor to consider his extended family's recent proposal for Vash’s future. He was around the age most would begin courting, and Knives had rejected several letters like it before. They had implored Knives to send Vash to his ancestral home, there were many cousins in kingly positions there who would gladly take Vash’s hand. But it wasn’t Julai, it wasn’t the Holy Land, it wasn’t even within the Empire. It wasn’t the same faith Vash was raised in, and it was outside Knives’ watchful eye.
He couldn’t do that to Vash. His little brother knew of his mother’s homeland in name only, and she herself had opted to convert to her husband’s—their father’s—denomination when they wed. It was all Vash knew and loved. He could not, would not consider sending Vash anywhere outside the Empire and outside the Church. There was truly no one on this earth Knives would consider for Vash’s hand. He deserved no one less than an Emperor.
